Tony was an incredible man, generous and tenacious. He gave me my first start in the Newspaper industry and guided the formative years of my career. He was such a strong leader who could spot talent and apply it. Passionate about his community and the people he worked with. He will be missed, but his legacy lives on in the lessons he taught so many of us. Vale Tony Whiting.

I recall Tony warmly welcoming me to ACP at the very beginning of my career in the early eighties. He was then Ad Director of The Bulletin at it’s height and successfully integrated Newsweek. I recall him as a real stage presence in the business. Very direct, methodical, well – read and articulate, it seemed to me that Tony uniquely stood aside from office politics which marked him as a professional leader and a man of character. Jannette and I recall Tony and Ria hosting us to afternoon drinks with our colleagues at their lovely Mosman home. We send our heartfelt thoughts and sympathies to Ria and all the Whiting family.

Tony employed me into the Financial Review newspaper not long after he joined Fairfax. In what was a highly political environment Tony stood by me, in front of me and had my back as the paper began a huge and long lasting growth cycle. He was a quiet, thoughtful and generous of spirit man. Never intrusive and he let his managers manage. I so enjoyed my years working with and for him. He stood out at Fairfax as a quiet achiever when most were shouting from the rooftops. Thankyou Tony for your abundance of support, our chats and the enormous difference you made. You were indeed a Titan and I will miss you.

I first met Tony when he was general manager of The Land newspaper and I was a sub-editor. When I was interested in joining The Border Mail, he encouraged me to send my application and CV in 1998. I am always grateful for those words of encouragement and for his support for my roles at the BM throughout the time he was CEO. I am saddened by his passing and extend to Ann Marie, his children, grandchildren and wider family and friends my deepest sympathies.

While I knew Tony when he was CEO of the Border Mail, I got to know him best as a colleague and fellow Board Director at Hume Bank.

Tony had a unique blend of attributes. Always a gentlemen, kind, generous, calm and measured. With a great interest in business and with strong business acumen he had a great ability to see the main game.

Tony had a great passion for the Albury Wodonga region as a place to live and do business and contributed greatly to the region.

I will miss him very much. My deepest sympathies to Ann Marie, his children and grand children.

It has been a privilege to have known Tony and the whole Whiting Family. Tony and Anne Marie were splendidly supportive Riverview parents during Charles’ and Ed’s time there, and Georgia is another version of her vivacious and beautiful Mother. The three children have shown excellent Ignatian discernment in choosing their life companions. Thank you for the gift of your friendship. Blessings on you all, Chris Gleeson SJ

Tony was one of a kind. Generous in every way and there was not a week that went past where we did not speak since we met. I have been the fortunate one to be able to share in his guidance and wisdom in many of life’s challenges. He will be sorely missed.

With deepest condolences for Ann Marie, Charles, Edward, Georgina and family.

    Ree & family,
Beautiful words spoken well in a fitting commemorative service today.

To these words I wrote some days ago – “So sorry for you all for your loss of Tony from your immediate lives; he, his idiosyncrasies, habits, likes & dislikes and his influences will live on with us all in our memories – and in the bits of each of you that are essentially “him”- I would add, “his smile, his wry humour, his look and his stature”
In the mid-60’s, we used to emulate Thierry La Frond’s slinging skills together, hurling chunks of limestone from the roadside in front of “the Whitings” over great distances or at the fenceposts opposite – and I was introduced by Tony to John Mayall’s blues, the Band’s Big Pink album and the early Stones music. Still have those on vinyl today.

A lot of happy associations to be grateful for, not to mention our many family evenings at “St Kilda” Sandbar.

Having watched the fitting tribute to your beloved Tony, we feel blessed to have been a part of his life, especially in his early days. We treasure the memories and hold them dearly while we join you in your grief at this sad time. Tony was a loved nephew and cousin in the Whiting families and will never be forgotten.
We send our love and deepest sympathy to Ree, Charles, Edward and Georgia and your families.
