Of all my teachers and coaches during my time at Rockhampton Grammar School, Rom is the one I’ll always remember. He brought out the best in me and gave me the confidence to strive for further growth as a person. I’ll always be grateful to have known him.

Dear Rom, You were such a BIG part of our Albury Park Run Family. I LOVED seeing you most Saturdays, you were such an inspiration to me and many others. You would often give me high fives and a big smile as I ran past you. One other time I was tail walker and you walked with me, we talked the whole time and shared our life and family stories, I will treasure those moments always. We even celebrated your 85th birthday with a cake, that’s how much everyone loved you. We will miss you dearly. You were such a warm, kind and caring Man with beautiful values. Keep walking our friend, not in front, not behind but beside us. Blessings.

Rom was highly regarded as an Officer of Cadets, Swimming, Lifesaving and Basketball coach at the Rockhampton Grammar School during the early 1960s. However, he was, more importantly, a superb mentor of teenage boys and in his quiet way encouraged them in their development into young men. During his Army career he again employed his unique leadership to encourage Soldiers who often had had little formal schooling to achieve goals beyond their expectations. Devoted to Val and his Family, Rom was respected in the community as a true Gentleman. He will be sadly missed.

I knew Rom Hayes years ago in the 80’s, he was a really good guy. I was also friends with Kelly and Helen in the 80’s also, nice girls. Anyways Rom was a real gentleman and an all round good guy. Sad to see that he passed, I didn’t know as I’ve been living in Sydney for years. I have kind of lost contact with the family. R.I.P Rom. My name is (Bert) Robert Hutton. Formally of Ashford St East Albury.
