I was Charles’ last Assistant Secretary before he retired from the ACT Trades and Labour council after 20 years in 1994. It was such an honour and a pleasure to work with him and to become his friend. He was a great man and created the TLC as the social conscience and voice of the community in the days before we had our own elected local government in the ACT

Over the weekend many of the old comrades from those days have been calling each other and remembering when our lives revolved around Charles and TLC meetings fortnightly at the Childers Street Pensioners Club, and the TLC offices in Woolley Street Dickson. We are all agreed that we owe it to Charles to remember him properly and well as a good man and a kind friend, and it would be the right thing for the union movement to remember him as the leader and social justice advocate he truly was.

    We will all miss him.

Yours in the struggle, as Charles would say

A loved friend, neighbour and role model. It was a great honour to have had you in our life. You were a huge influence on our children and will be greatly missed.

Charles was the first – and maybe the last – of our longtime union colleagues to say ‘see you comrade’ and mean it.
Our friendship with Charles was as activists, as our boss and leader, in his retirement – as a friend and mentor on the vicissitudes of the national training and health and safety systems, a caring neighbour to friends at Captains Flat and later, while he lived a full last few years in Albury, as a close personal friend.
We already miss you comrade. Much love from us both, Susan & Graham
