I remember Mr Smith as my English teacher and I graduated in the class of 1985. Mr Smith was a passionate and brilliant English teacher. I remember having to stand behind my desk as he entered the room saying “Good morning Mr Smith”, I also remember him praising an essay that I had written about butterflies. I scored a great mark for this but he actually used my response to demonstrate how a poetry essay should be written. Mr Smith was passionate and fired passion for many students love for this subject. RIP Mr Bruce Smith. You were a true gentlman and fsntastic teacher. I will never forget you. Sarah Downe Class of 1985

RIP Mr Smith. Since School he insisted we call him Bruce. He lived for his students, they were his life. In 1963 he was our Form Master in 1st Form. Many of us have reminisced about Bruce’s influence on our lives – all of it positive. If it’s possible to make Corporal punishment positive, he went close to that too. He loved the theatre of teaching, wearing the academic gown. He dressed immaculately, thus his nick name “Rags”. His acuracy throwing the blackboard duster and a chalk at an erant boy was renowned, never designed to injure, always to regain attention. Raising himself up and down on his toes and looking sideways down his nose at you, never to be forgotten. At Reunions he was keen to include us back into the life of the school. One of our great Masters, still looking over us no doubt.
