Apologies for my absence at David’s funeral. (I have a longstanding doctor’s appointment).
I was responsible for recruiting David to CSIRO Irrigation Research following the departure of Emmet O’Loughlin to Canberra, and he arrived from Zimbabwe with Glenda and a young family. Later David’s parents spent a year in my Griffith house while I took maternity leave in Melbourne. Our common research interest was the management of aquatic plants but we expanded this into issues of water quality with the appointment of Rod Oliver and Paul Boon who moved with David to the Murray Darling Freshwater Research Centre- the beginning of David’s illustrious career as a research manager and leader. Fond memories of early days!
    Commiserations to Glenda and family.

So sorry to hear of David’s passing. His legacy will include all the years of friendship and supportive collaboration with so many wetland ecologists across the Murray-Darling Basin and his generous contributions to so many discussions, meetings, investigations and conferences. Thank you David for your words of support and encouragement, and willing advice on so many questions through the years. Condolences to his extended family and thank you for sharing him with our wider wetlands family.

My sincere condolences to Glenda and all the family. I am so very sorry I am unable to attend what I’m sure will be a beautiful celebration of David’s amazing life today. I have so many wonderful memories of David from the early days of MDFRC. I can see him now – in the tea room, jiggling his watch, and I can hear him telling his fascinating stories and talking about current scientific findings. David’s contribution to limnology was crucial to not only Australia, but globally. David was the first to encourage me to find out what ‘limnology’ meant way back in 1987. David was a colleague, friend, mentor and coach that I know I was extremely fortunate to have in my life. David contributed to community in so many ways. Thank you so very much, David, for everything. Go well.

My teenage years were full of sharing life in the Mitchell household with our honorary brothers, and hearing stories told with humour in David’s great voice. The loss of David has been slow and hard. Even we know now he can be renewed in his Lord, it cannot take away the pain of him gone from this Earth. Praying for all as you mourn. Jennifer
